Cuthbertson wrestlers improve to 7-0

WAXHAW -- The Cuthbertson Cavaliers improved their dual team wrestling record to 7-0 with victories over Charlotte Catholic and Marvin Ridge on their home mat Thursday night. They defeated both conference opponents by an average score of 65 points.

Cavalier wrestlers who went unbeaten for the evening include: senior 138-pounder Nicholas Schutz (10-0), junior 145-pounder Grant Kahlenberg, senior 145-pounder Leander Chance (18-7), senior 160-pounder William Swann (17-4), junior 160-pounder Jack McDermid (19-4), junior 170-pounder Tyler Carroll (7-4), junior 182-pounder Kurt Petroff (8-4) and senior 220-pounder Matthew Distante (6-6).

Cuthbertson easily handled Charlotte Catholic by a score of 70-12 and defeated Marvin Ridge 60-18.

"All of our guys are feeling really confident," said Kahlenberg. "Over the years, Cuthbertson has progressed as a team. We've just got to keep rolling; all business every day."

Facing a six-point deficit versus the Mavericks, Kahlenberg and Chance tied the score at 18 with their matches ending with decision victories. From there, the Cavaliers ran away with six consecutive pins and a forfeit.

Head coach Dan Hartman is trying to lead the Cavs' wrestling program to its first conference championship.

"Our guys performed exactly the way we thought they performed," Hartman said. "We haven't historically been a leader in (the 3A Southern Carolina Conference) and I think we are this year. This is the first opportunity that we had to show what type of team we are now. We are pleased with how it's going."

Cuthbertson travels to Olympic High School on Saturday for an individual tournament.

Marvin Ridge has an 0-3 dual team record in their 2019-20 season. The Mavericks had two unbeaten wrestlers on the evening, including senior 120-pounder Jacob Yim (2-2) and senior 126-pounder Tommy Capul (10-0).

The Mavericks travel to Indian Land High School in South Carolina on Saturday for a dual tournament.
