Hardiman reaches 1,000 career points in Cavaliers' win

WAXHAW — Cuthbertson High senior guard Lauryn Hardiman eclipsed 1,000 career points in a 52-37 home win over cross-town rival Parkwood on Tuesday night.

A fourth-year starter, Hardiman (5-foot-7) now has 1,001 points; she finished the game with six points and four rebounds.

Hardiman is the fourth player in school history to reach 1,000 points along with former standouts Morgan Carlson (1,011), Taylor Helms (1,570) and current teammate Maddie Dillinger (1,106).

"(That milestone) is a good feeling," Hardiman said. "As a team, we played good defense tonight. No one could get past us. We had everyone flustered and we took them out of their game. … If we still stay fundamentally sound as a team, we'll get back (to the state final)."

"(Hardiman) has been great since day one," said CHS coach Joel Allen. "I am ecstatic that she got to 1,000. She has been healthy the last six games and she had a couple of good games. She's definitely been a centerpiece to our program the last four years."

Cuthbertson improved to 21-2 overall and 12-1 in the Southern Carolina Conference heading into Friday's home game against third-place Weddington. The Cavaliers have now won four straight games since their road loss to Charlotte Catholic in OT.

The Cavaliers jumped out to a 12-7 lead by the end the first quarter and they carried a 23-16 advantage into halftime.

Rebels guard Shimiya Taylor, who has 257 points as a freshman, was held to just five points. Jade Washington led Parkwood with a team-high 10 points.

"Tonight's game was all about defense," Allen said. "Shimiya is a really good player and (Ruby Williams) and (Dillinger) completely took her out of the game. … We still had a comfortable win even though we didn't really shoot great from the field offensively. A win is a win so we'll take it."

Dillinger led all scorers with 18 points for the Cavaliers.

Parkwood drops to 14-9 overall and 7-6 in SCC play. The Rebels will host Monroe on Friday.
