WAXHAW -- Offensive balance helped Weddington High's girls rally to defeat rival Marvin Ridge, 44-36, on the road on Tuesday night.
The Warriors had three players score in double digits, led by Karrah Katzbach's 13 points; teammates Miranda Barron and Ali Call each contributed 10 points and five rebounds.
The win gives Weddington (11-3, 3-2 SCC) sole possession of third place in the Southern Carolina 3A Conference.
Marvin Ridge opened the game up with a 11-10 edge in the first quarter, and held a 20-15 lead going into halftime. The Mavericks defense played crucial in the first half as teammates Zahra Douglas and Kyndall Shivers combined for 7 rebounds and a steal.
"We knew we could pressure (Marvin Ridge)," said WHS head coach Aaron Brown. "We ran them the whole game so we knew they could run out of gas the last quarter and I think that really played a part. We also played smart offensively taking good shots, not rushing and making them have to guard us."
Katzbach is averaging a team-high 15 points per game.
"Tonight was a big game with tough competition," said Katzbach. "A key to our game tonight was our defense because we have been slacking on that. Picking up all of our defense really contributed to the win."
Weddington hosts defending conference champion Cuthbertson on Friday.
"We've got a tough one on Friday with the defending conference champions, runner-up state champions so we can't take no days off," Brown said.
Marvin Ridge will host Charlotte Catholic (9-3, 4-1 SCC) on Friday.
