Potential "NFL Bubble"

Updated: Dec 10, 2020

Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen! Welcome to the first-ever blog created by The MWO Show. Thank you very much for tuning in. The blogs that I post soon will cover a variety of COVID-19 issues ranging from high school athletics to professional level sports. With this being said, I would like to inform you that the National Football League is now considering a "bubble" format plan to save their season.

First of all, I feel disappointed in the NFL for not setting an appropriate approach to COVID-19 protocols before they kicked off the 2020 season. In The Oberlin Review's article from October 9th, this issue shows a lack of leadership on their part because they now have to cram protocols in a short period (Bayfield, paragraph 5). This issue presents several consequences to the league as a result of neglecting the safety of its staff, players, and fans. For example, games could be rescheduled, or else, their season may be in total jeopardy.

There is no telling when the lack of leadership from the NFL started, but creating a bubble plan would be the only option the league has in place. According to the NY Daily News, each designated bubble would contain at least one hundred people in a variety of positions (McDonald, paragraph 10). In my opinion, this plan would not work since the NFL flat-out ignored the risks of playing football in a pandemic. Contrasting to other professional sports organizations like the NBA and MLS, they went ahead and created a bubble plan early so they can play a normal season. The NFL needs to step up their leadership game before anything else goes wrong. If professional sports could create bubble plans, all sports could so they can prepare safely for their seasons.

Every sports league has room for improvement, but we have a long way to go to find our way out of the COVID-19 pandemic. In my next blog, I will share financial risks that put a toll on high school athletics in the United States. This has been the MWO Show and until next time, God bless you!
