Sports Cancellations: A Toll on Normalcy

Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. Welcome back to The MWO Show blog! This week, I want us to think of another issue that has aroused the sports world in COVID-19. Since March 11th, 2020, sports fans around the United States cringed with thoughts of possible cancellations to sporting events due to the virus. When I first heard about the pandemic and its adverse effects, discontent thoughts start to wrap around my head. I was vacationing in Sarasota, Florida, when I found out that my sports reporting would hold off. The entire country would start to plummet from everyday life to an infinitive time of uncertainty.

The college football world would ease back to shortened schedules when the pandemic slowed down a bit. However, October and November of 2020 were impenetrable for some teams as an increasing trend of infections led to postpones and cancellations. According to CNN, 14 college football games scheduled for this week are postponed or canceled. That is probably the largest number of games affected on a weekly basis. While I understand that everyone plays a role in slowing the spread of COVID-19, I feel angry about this issue's outcome. It also arouses anger inside of me that cancellations could lead to unknown answers.

At the University of Missouri, their men's basketball program learned a few lessons from the Missouri-Georgia football game's cancellation last week. Head coach, Cuonzo Martin, says that taking safety precautions each week would improve his team's chances to avoid postpones/cancellations. At least there are safety precautions for every sports team out there to follow to play out their seasons. I believe that is crucial if sports fans want to see an entire season played smoothly and safely.

If I were to be in a position to be a coach of a sports team, I would set standards to prevent harmful actions from my players. COVID-19 is a tremendous challenge the world is tackling, and cancellations are a downfall factor coming from the effects. Everyone should consider the pros and cons of joining a team amid a pandemic. In my next blog, I will switch to a different topic about sports. It would release in the middle of December after the conclusion of the Fall 2020 semester. Until next time, this is The MWO Show and your host, Michael Wayne O'Neill. God bless!
